What Does SPF Really Mean … And Why It Matters
Share
When choosing a sun care product, we often focus on the number – SPF 15, 30, 50 but do we really understand what SPF means?
SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, measures how long your skin will be protected from UVB rays, the kind that cause sunburn and contribute to skin cancer. For example, if your skin typically burns after 10 minutes in the sun, SPF 30 should offer protection for approximately 300 minutes. But it’s not quite that simple.
The strength of the sun, your skin type, and how much product you apply all affect the true protection you get. And while SPF helps shield from UVB, it doesn’t necessarily protect against UVA rays, which are responsible for premature ageing and long-term damage. That’s why you should always look for a broad-spectrum formula and reapply every two hours.
